Where will CE Pros find new inspiration and fresh opportunities in 2012? CE Pro has selected 5 Home Technology Opportunities for the coming year. They will be presented in the January 2012 of the magazine (CES issue).
1. Cloud-based services
Most integrators are sold on the notion of cloud-based content, but the opportunities in the cloud go way beyond that. In 2011 we started to see some promising activity around cloud-based home-control, telephony, energy management and more. We believe CE pros will embrace these types of applications in 2012.
2. Digital audio
Of course, digital audio has been around for many years, but few integrators build rich systems around it. 2012 should see an explosion of high-resolution audio download and streaming services. It’s a great time to build an arsenal of go-to DACs and other components that deliver the best music quality for their discriminating clients.
3. Alternative input technologies
Taking a cue from CEA’s 5 Technology Trends for 2012, CE Pro has included alternative input devices as a hot home technology for the year. But while CEA highlights touchscreen technology, that’s old school for CE pros. We think prospects are bright for voice control, biometrics, near field communication (NFC), RFID, gesture control and more.
4. Self-contained security/automation systems
The high-volume security companies have been tearing up the town with their relatively low-cost, integrated solutions that blend security and automation. The options may be limited, but installation is simple, the components are inexpensive and the recurring revenue is awesome. More and more independent dealers are finding opportunities in these types of systems. We think 2012 will be a banner year.
5. LED lighting
LED lighting is all the rage, but most CE pros haven’t taken advantage of its vast potential. We think 2012 will be a break-out year in two key areas. First, integrators will get into the business of swapping out energy-draining incandescent bulbs with efficient LED fixtures, especially in commercial venues. Second, we will see great new opportunities for installing and controlling RGB lighting for ambiance and whimsical applications in the home.
